The May 31, 2017 suicide-truck bomb attack was one of the worst terror attacks to hit Kabul in the last several years, and certainly since the April 2016 attack on the National Intelligence Headquarters. The attack occurred in the “Green Zone”  Kabul’s diplomatic enclave and the most secure area in the city. This report examines the damage caused by the explosion and the security surrounding the Green Zone after the attack. Recent imagery shows extensive damage to the immediate blast area, particularly the German Embassy and Roshan Telecom. An enhanced physical security presence is also visible.
The Green Zone, home to embassies and key Afghan Government buildings, is a lucrative target for both the Taliban and Islamic  State. Large portions of the Green Zone are protected by blast walls that are 3m high. The Green Zone has a 12.8km perimeter, 2.6km longer than the Green Zone for Baghdad. Unlike Baghdad’s Green Zone, which is tucked against the Tigris River, the Kabul Green Zone is in the middle of the city with numerous entry points thanks to its peculiar shape.
