KARI Releases First Images from KOMPSAT-3A SatelliteKOMPSAT-3A Earth observation satellite, launched on March. 25 2015, has successfully been deployed in orbit and all systems have been tested and verified. KARI released images from KOMPAT-3A taken from all over the world in 55 centimeter resolution. The areas imaged include Burj Al Arab in UAE and an IR image of Han river in Korea. KOMPSAT-3A Electro-Optical imagery Burj Al Arab, UAE | KOMPSAT3A - 0.55 m resolution | Collected April 01, 2015 | KOMPSAT-3A Infrared imagery Han River, KOREA | KOMPSAT3A - 5.5 m resolution | Collected April 01, 2015 | KOMPSAT-3A was developed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute to ensure data continuity in the visible wavelengths and add infrared capabilities. The Advanced Earth Imaging Sensor System installed on the satellite covers the visible wavelengths to acquire full-color imagery plus an infrared channel. The major goal of the KOMPSAT-3A program is to develop an earth observation satellite to obtain IR (Infrared) and high resolution EO (Electro-Optical) images for GIS (Geographical Information Systems) applications in environmental, agricultural and oceanographic sciences as well as natural disasters.hana kwon

Flooded areas in Copiapo, Atacam Region, ChileSource: KOMPSAT-3 pan-sharpened Imagery Acquired: 27/03/2015 Chile floods : Northern Chile hit by disastrous floods Heavy rain in northern Chile has caused floods which left 17 dead and affected thousands of people. It is reportedly the worst rain that this region has experienced in 80 years. The rain began on 24 March over the Atacama Region. This area of the country, which is also home to part of the Atacama Desert, rarely experiences a great deal of rain, and the desert is regarded as the driest place on Earth. This unusual storm activity which impacted the area recently was a result of a cold front over the Andes, which resulted in rain falling over the mountains. This rainwater flowed down the mountains into the nearby towns and rivers. Rivers, such as the Copiapo, overflowed, and swept through towns in their path. Almost five thousand people were left homeless by the flooding, and it is estimated that 11,000 were affected by the disaster. Some towns lost all power and access to clean water, and other towns have been left with a thick layer of mud through their streets. Roads have been blocked by the flooding, which has made helicopters one of the safest options for rescue efforts. Emergency workers are searching for twenty missing people, and have helped others take refuge in shelters.expworks
