[SpaceNews Press Release] Korea’s SI Imaging: DigitalGlobe is no longer alone in selling 50-cm imageryKorea’s SI Imaging: DigitalGlobe is no longer alone in selling 50-cm imagery This image of Dubai's Burj Al Arab Hotel, taken by South Korea's Kompsat-3A satellite, is an example of the products that SI Imaging Services of Korea has begun selling on the market. The company says it is now second only to DigitalGlobe for image sharpness available commercially. Credit: SIIS PARIS – SI Imaging Services (SIIS) of South Korea on July 6 said it had begun commercial sales of imagery from its Kompsat-3A optical Earth observation satellite, making Korea the second nation, after the United States, to put 50-centimeter-class pictures on the open market. In a statement, SIIS said Kompsat-3A, launched in March 2015, offers imagery with a ground sampling distance of less than 50 centimeters, making it the sharpest imagery available commercially with the exception of DigitalGlobe of the United States. Westminster, Colorado-based DigitalGlobe now distributes commercial imagery with a resolution as sharp as 30 centimeters. Its WorldView-4 satellite, scheduled for launch later this year, is capable of producing 25-centimeter imagery. DigitalGlobe and other companies selling satellite imagery commercially say resolution is not the Alpha and Omega of a successful geospatial-imagery business. Speed of delivery to users, revisit time, the quality of the imagery library and multiple other factors are just as important, depending on the type of customers. Nonetheless, these companies generally agree the high-resolution end of the market is where demand is increasing most rapidly, and where the business is most profitable... SI Imaging Services started KOMPSAT-3A commercial servicesSI Imaging Services (SIIS) started commercial services of KOMPSAT-3A imagery with the world’s second highest resolution satellite from July, 5th. KOMPSAT-3A is part of the Korean Multipurpose Satellite Program developed and operated by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) for earth observation purpose. The earth observation satellite offers clear imagery with a resolution less than 0.5 meter. KOMPSAT-3A, also known as Arirang-3A, was launched into orbit in March last year. After more than a year of successful test operation, SIIS began the commercial services on 5th of July. It would make South Korea the world's second country to enter the less-than-0.5-meter-resolution satellite imagery market after the United States. KOMPSAT-3A is the sister of KOMPSAT-3, using the same satellite bus and payload. Its local access time is very unique in the afternoon, 13:30, which is the same with KOMPSAT-3. However, since KOMPSAT-3A was put into lower orbit than KOMPSAT-3, it delivers clearer and sharper view. The same imaging time and similar payload with KOMPSAT-3 will amplify its capacity and help to even out the difference of the color. With KOMPSAT-3A imagery available today with 0.5 meter resolution imagery of KOMPSAT-3 at customer’s service, decision makers have new and more options to consider for their needs. New York, United States (November 4th, 2015) ⓒKARI – Worldwide Distribution SIIS Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi (October 26th, 2015) ⓒKARI – Worldwide Distribution SIIS The pictures above are the KOMPSAT-3A images. They are the examples to show that KOMPSAT-3A can accurately spot the edges of buildings and small structures. The image of New York shows skyscrapers downtown, and even window shapes are spotted. In particular, the second image provides a vivid look of Ferrari World. The advantage of KOMPSAT-3A imagery is quite apparent in the last picture where details of the small structures are visible. SI Imaging Services (SIIS) is a leading satellite imagery provider for Remote Sensing and Earth Observation. SIIS is the exclusive worldwide marketing and sales representative of KOMPSAT constellation including KOMPSAT-2, KOMPSAT-3, KOMPSAT-3A, and KOMPSAT-5. It is a unique combination of VHR optical and SAR data with variable local access time from the morning to the afternoon (06:00, 10:50, 13:30, 18:00). SIIS provides the satellite imagery worldwide through over 80 sales partners. Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) is the Korean institute dedicated to aerospace research and is in charge of Korean space program. KARI has developed, and operated its optical remote sensing satellites such as KOMPSAT-1, KOMPSAT-2, KOMPSAT-3, KOMPSAT-3A, and the first Korean SAR the satellite, KOMPSAT-5. Analysis report on Tanjung Langsat port in MalaysiaTanjung Langsat Port (TLP) is the third port in Johor, Malaysia, designed to complement the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Johor Port in Pasir Gudang. It is Southeast Asia's premier speciality terminal, it handles bulk cargo such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and dangerous chemicals. KOMPSAT-3 imagery spotted each tank's edge, and it allowed STEE team to measure the diameter of them. The number of tanks and their size give information of the capacity of port to handle chemicals and gas. In other parts of the analysis report, KOMPSAT-3 and KOMPSAT-5 image show oil rings on the sea around Tanjung Langsat port. Please download below attached file to see the full analysis report. Status Analysis of Russian military base in Kotelny Island, RussiaKotelny (Kotel’nyy) Island is located off the northeastern coast of Siberia and has been home to an actively maintained civilian meterological station on its northwest shore for several decades. During the summer of 2013, Russian Northern Fleet engineers landed on Kotelny Island to re-open the air base at Temp (Tempa) to facilitate further engineering efforts to expand the air field and build a permanent military base. KOMPSAT-5 imagery made it possible to detect a radar facility and new military base called 'Northern Shamrock'. Moreover, more details such as approximately 36m diameter radome and 19.5m diameter radome were shown in the analysis report. Please download below attached file to see the full analysis report.
